This article is for people seeking lasting love, not sexual athletes. But the rise in AIDS/HIV/sexually transmitted diseases means that anyone who intends to have sex should not only take sensible precautions to protect themselves from the risk of exposure, but they should also decide a personal code of conduct in these matters now, if they haven't already done so. The risk of AIDS/HTV is yet another reason why making love within the safe and secure confines of a mutually faithful and permanent relationship is the desire of an ever increasing number of people in this enlightened age.
Each of us must make a decision about how to conduct our social lives in the wake of the AIDS/HIV nightmare. It seems to me that there are five rational choices:
• Total abstinence except within the security of a faithful and permanent relationship.
• Engaging in 'safe sex¡¯ (intercourse with condoms and contraceptive jelly or cream). The words 'safe sex should be taken with a pinch of salt. The wretched rubber things have been known to split open at some stage during intercourse and, in any event, they're not 100 per cent safe. They are, however, much safer than sex without condoms.
• Restricting the range of sexual activity. There's a lot you can do without exchanging bodily fluids!
• Trusting your instinct and judgment in your choice of sexual partners.
• Getting yourself tested for HIV and insisting on negative test results from anyone with whom you plan to have sex with in the future. Many couples about to embark on a permanent relationship do this.
What is your personal policy on sex? Will it stand up to a reality check after a romantic dinner for two or a damn good night clubbing with someone really good looking and sexy when the beat of the music, the throb of sensual excitement, the raw pang of lust makes you all steamed up and ready for sex? Would you be able to resist the overwhelming psychological compulsion that makes some of us take chances in a parked car, in the back porch or in bed?
